Holiday Family Portraits in Humboldt County: When to Book, What to Plan, and Why Rain Is Welcome

When to Book Your Holiday Family Portrait Session
Book earlier than feels necessary. Late October through early November is the sweet spot for a session you want in hand before the holidays. That gives us room to find a date that works for everyone, a backup date in case the weather turns, and enough time for editing, your online gallery, and card printing.
December days on the North Coast are short. The sun is down before five, and the good light comes early and goes quickly. Weekend afternoons fill up fast, so if your family can do a weekday or an earlier slot, you'll have more choices.
If you're reading this in the middle of November, don't panic. Reach out anyway. Sessions still happen, and a little more flexibility on your end goes a long way.
Choosing a Location That Feels Like Home
One of the best parts of living here is that the backdrop is already extraordinary. For on-location family portraits, I like to match the place to the family:
- The coast. The sea stacks at Trinidad State Beach, the smooth stones of Moonstone Beach, and the rugged shoreline near Camel Rock give you drama, texture, and that wide Pacific horizon.
- The redwoods. Soft, filtered light, towering trunks, and ferns. It's quiet, timeless, and wonderful for families with small children.
- Town. If your family loves Arcata or Eureka, we can use the character of those neighborhoods for something more personal and relaxed.
Tell me where your family actually spends time. The best portraits feel like your Humboldt, not a postcard.
What to Plan Before the Day
A little preparation makes the whole session easier and the photos better.
Clothing. Coordinate rather than match. Pick a palette of two or three colors that work together, such as deep greens, rust, cream, and denim, and let everyone wear something a little different within it. Layers photograph well and keep everyone warm: sweaters, scarves, boots, a nice jacket. Skip big logos and busy patterns.
Timing and kids. Schedule around naps and meals. A well-rested, fed child is the difference between smiles and a meltdown. Bring a snack, and let the little ones wander a bit while we work.
Warmth. Coastal air in December is cold and often damp. Bring a blanket, hats and gloves for between shots, and a thermos of something hot. People relax when they're comfortable.
The big picture. Think about how you'll use the photos. Holiday card, wall print, gifts for relatives? If you want a framed print or canvas for the living room, tell me up front so I can compose with that in mind.
Being Flexible About the Rain
This is the part people worry about most, so let me say it plainly: rain doesn't ruin a portrait session in Humboldt County. Often it improves one.
Overcast skies act like a giant softbox. They wrap the light evenly around faces, so there are no squinting eyes and no harsh shadows. In the redwoods, a bit of mist or fog turns the whole forest into something quiet and almost cinematic. Wet stones on the beach glow. The colors of your clothes look richer against a gray, moody sky.
What I ask is that you stay flexible:
- Pick a backup date when you book. If the forecast looks truly miserable, we'll move the session rather than fight it.
- Watch for breaks. North Coast weather changes fast. A steady downpour can give way to a clear, glowing hour, and I'm happy to adjust the start time to catch it.
- Bring an umbrella or two. A clear or neutral umbrella can even become part of the portrait.
- Have a sheltered option. Between a covered spot, a favorite porch, or a spot under the trees, we can often keep shooting through light drizzle.
A little rain also makes for the stories your family will tell for years: the time we all laughed at the storm and got the best photo anyway.
Ready to Book?
If you'd like holiday family portraits in Humboldt County, whether it's a classic beach session, a walk among the redwoods, or something closer to home, I'd love to hear from you. Tell me who's in your family, where you love to be, and when you're hoping to have photos in hand, and we'll build a plan together.
Because in the end, the holidays here are about the people you wrap up in the coat beside you, the fog rolling in, the sound of the ocean somewhere close. A good portrait just remembers it for you.
