I live in one of the most remote corners of California, which means that when I land in a real city, the camera comes out immediately. Cities have their own kind of energy — the geometry of the streets, the weight of old architecture, the way light bounces off glass and stone in ways that are completely different from anything you'd find in nature. This collection grew out of travels to two cities that couldn't be more different from each other, or from Humboldt County: New York and Oslo. Both got under my skin in different ways, and both gave me images I'm genuinely proud of.
New York is almost too much for a photographer — there's a great shot around every corner, and the challenge is slowing down enough to actually make it. The Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan skyline seen from across the water, Radio City Music Hall lit up at night — these are iconic subjects, but they're iconic for a reason, and when the light is right they still stop you cold. Oslo was a different kind of discovery — quieter, more architectural, full of history written into the stonework of its streets and buildings. The armory, the sundials, the statues, the church — Oslo rewarded the photographers who were willing to just walk and look. I did a lot of both.
