You bought a great camera. Maybe you've had it for a year, maybe longer. And yet, somewhere between the box it came in and the landscapes you see in your head, something got lost. You're shooting in Auto because the manual modes feel like a foreign language. Your images come back soft, or blown out, or just... not quite what you saw with your eyes.
I've been there. And I can help.
I offer one-on-one photography and camera tutoring sessions right here in Humboldt County — on location, in the field, in the same places I've spent more than thirty years making images. Not in a classroom. Not in front of a PowerPoint. Outside, camera in hand, with actual light falling on actual subjects while we work through everything together.
What We Cover
Every session is built around you — your camera, your goals, your current sticking points. We start wherever you are and work forward from there. Some of the most common topics we cover:
Understanding Your Camera. Aperture, shutter speed, ISO — the exposure triangle explained in plain language, with real-world examples in front of us. We'll shoot the same scene multiple ways so you can see exactly what each setting does and why it matters.
Composition and the Art of Seeing. Technical settings are only half the picture. We'll talk about how to approach a scene — where to stand, what to include, what to leave out, how to use foreground and depth to create images that pull the viewer in.
Working with Natural Light. Humboldt's light is extraordinary — and famously moody. I'll show you how to read it, how to anticipate it, and how to make it work for you rather than against you, whether we're in golden hour at the coast or under a canopy of old-growth redwoods.
Landscape and Nature Photography. From wide coastal panoramas to intimate forest details, we'll work through the techniques that separate snapshots from keepers — long exposures, depth of field control, and the patience that comes with knowing when to press the shutter.
Wildlife Photography Basics. Humboldt County is a wildlife photographer's playground. I'll introduce you to the fundamentals of tracking and anticipating animal behavior, and we'll talk gear — focal lengths, burst modes, and how to stay ready.
Astrophotography Introduction. If you've ever wanted to photograph the Milky Way arching over the Pacific, this is your starting point. We'll cover the basic settings, the right conditions to look for, and the best spots in Humboldt to get away from the light pollution.
Post-Processing Foundations. Shooting is only the beginning. I can introduce you to Lightroom and the editing decisions that take a raw file from flat to finished — without overdoing it.
Where We Meet
One of the things I love most about tutoring here is the classroom we get to work in. Humboldt County is one of the most photographically rich places in California, and a session with me means shooting in locations I know intimately — places I've returned to season after season for three decades.
Depending on your interests and goals, we might head to the beaches of Trinidad, where Moonstone, Luffenholtz, and Camel Rock offer completely different moods and compositions within minutes of each other. We might explore Prairie Creek Redwoods or Fern Canyon, where the filtered light and ancient scale of the trees create challenges and opportunities you won't find anywhere else. Or we might chase a sunset along the Lost Coast, or walk the edges of Humboldt Bay where egrets and shorebirds work the shallows at low tide.
Every location teaches something different. I'll match where we shoot to what you want to learn.
Who This Is For
These sessions are for anyone who wants to grow as a photographer. That includes:
I work with all major camera brands — Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji, and others — and I'll teach to your specific body and menu system.
Why One-on-One, In the Field
Workshops have their place, but there's something uniquely powerful about working with a single student, undivided, in the actual environment where pictures get made. You ask the question that's been nagging you for months, and we stop right there and solve it — not in a hypothetical, but with your camera, in your hands, pointed at something real.
I've been photographing Humboldt County since the late 1980s. These aren't locations I've looked up — they're places I know the way a longtime resident knows a neighborhood. I know where the light lands at 7 a.m. in October, which tide to shoot Camel Rock at, and where the elk tend to graze in the evening hours. That kind of local knowledge isn't something you'll find in a YouTube tutorial.
A session with me isn't just camera instruction. It's an introduction to one of the most beautiful places on earth, through the eyes of someone who has never stopped being amazed by it.

The light is out there. Let's go find it.
