Learn to See the Coast: One-on-One In-Field Photography Tutoring
Oct 27, 2026
Some of the best lessons I've ever learned about photography didn't happen in a classroom or in front of a screen. They happened standing on a cold beach in the half-dark before sunrise, watching the light change and realizing I had about ninety seconds to get it right.
That's exactly why I teach the way I do. After more than thirty years of photographing Humboldt County, I offer one-on-one, in-the-field photography tutoring: just you, me, your camera, and the coast.
Learning Where It Actually Happens
Tutorials and videos can teach you what the buttons do. What they can't do is stand next to you while the fog lifts off Trinidad Beach and tell you, right then, what to change.
In the field, the light doesn't wait. A wave sets up, a cloud breaks, the color deepens along the horizon, and you have to know what to do with your camera before it's gone. Having a working pro beside you means you get real-time guidance in the moment it matters, so the lesson is attached to the picture you're actually making.
What We Cover
Every session is shaped around you, your gear, and your goals. A beginner with a new camera and a seasoned hobbyist chasing a better night sky need very different things. Here are some of the areas we can work on together:
- Know your camera. Getting off auto and understanding exposure: aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and how they work together. We'll also dial in your autofocus, metering, and the settings you'll use most.
- Reading light. Learning when and where the best light happens, how to read it, and how to make the most of golden hour, blue hour, overcast days, and coastal fog.
- Composition. Finding strong foregrounds, leading lines, and balance, and learning to slow down and build a frame instead of just pointing at something pretty.
- Landscape and seascape technique. Working with tides, moving water, long exposures, and filters to capture the motion and mood of the North Coast.
- Wildlife and telephoto work. Tracking, focusing, and shooting with long lenses without losing the shot.
- Astrophotography. Planning for dark skies, focusing on stars, and the settings and gear that make the Milky Way come to life.
- Gear and workflow. Using your tripod, filters, and lenses with confidence, and a look at how I approach editing so your files are ready to shine.
Not sure where to start? Tell me what frustrates you or what you'd love to photograph, and we'll build the day around that.
The Benefits of a Pro in the Moment
- Instant feedback. You don't have to wait until you're home to find out what went wrong. We can look at the back of the camera, adjust, and try again on the spot.
- Faster progress. Bad habits get caught early, and good habits stick. Hours of trial and error can shrink into a single morning.
- Local knowledge. I'll take you to spots I've photographed for decades and share when to be there, where to stand, and how the tides and weather change what's possible.
- Confidence with your own gear. You'll leave knowing how to use the camera you already own, not wondering whether you need a new one.
- A pace that fits you. One-on-one means no crowd and no rushing. We go as fast or as slow as you need.
Where We Might Shoot
The Humboldt coast is the best classroom I know. Depending on the season, the light, and what you want to learn, we might meet at Moonstone Beach, Trinidad, Luffenholtz, or Camel Rock, wander among the giants at Prairie Creek, or work the quiet edges of Humboldt Bay. Every location teaches something different.
Who It's For
Whether you're picking up a camera for the first time, you've had one for years and feel stuck, or you're visiting Humboldt County and want to make the most of your trip, there's a place for you. You don't need expensive equipment. You need curiosity and a willingness to be out there when the light is good.
Let's Go Shoot
If you've ever stood in front of something beautiful and felt your photo didn't do it justice, I'd love to help change that. Reach out to book a session, and let's get you out on the coast with the right settings, a better eye, and a little more patience for that one perfect moment.
The light is out there waiting. Let's go find it together.
