Why the Holidays Matter So Much to Local Artists and Photographers
Oct 27, 2026
There's a particular kind of light on the North Coast in late fall. The sun sits low over the Pacific, the fog pulls back from Trinidad Head just long enough to let gold spill across the water, and the redwoods hold the last of the afternoon in their branches. After more than thirty years of photographing Humboldt County, it still stops me in my tracks every time.
It also reminds me that the holidays are here, and for those of us who make a living with our hands and our eyes, this is the season that matters most.
The Season That Sustains the Year
Most people don't realize how much of an independent artist's year rides on these few weeks. Many of us spend months in the field and at the desk: waking before dawn for a tide, waiting out a storm for one clearing, editing, printing, framing, and packaging. The holidays are when that work finally finds its way into homes.
For a small studio like mine, the support I receive between now and the new year helps carry me through the quiet winter months, fund the next season of shooting, and keep doing what I love in the place I call home.
A Gift That Carries a Place Inside It
A photograph isn't like most gifts. It holds a specific morning, a specific stretch of coastline, a moment that will never happen exactly that way again. Whether it's the surf breaking against the rocks at Moonstone Beach, mist threading through the ancient groves, or the long, quiet curve of the dunes near Samoa, a print on the wall is a daily reminder of somewhere that matters to you or to the person you're giving it to.
For the family member who moved away and misses home, for the couple who got married on the bluffs, for the friend who has hiked these trails with you for years, there's no gift that says "I remember this place with you" quite like a piece of it.
Why Shopping Local Matters
When you buy from a local artist, the impact goes a long way. It stays right here in our community: it supports a neighbor, a small business, and a family that lives, works, and pays attention to the same coastline you do. It helps keep the creative life of Humboldt County thriving, and it means the people who tell this region's story are the ones who actually live it.
It also means a more personal experience. You're not ordering from a faceless warehouse. You're getting something made by someone who stood in the wind and the cold to make it, and who will answer when you have a question.
Local Delivery and Hand-Signed Prints
To make your holiday shopping easier, I'll have select products available for delivery right here in the local area, so you can skip the shipping deadlines and the worry about whether your gift will arrive in time.
And if you'd like a personal touch, I'm happy to hand sign your print on request. Just let me know when you place your order. A signed photograph turns a beautiful gift into a keepsake, and it's a small way for me to say thank you for supporting my work.
Beyond Prints: Portrait Sessions
If you're thinking about a gift that creates new memories, I also offer on-location portrait sessions across Humboldt County. Family portraits among the redwoods, a quiet shoot on the beach at sunset, a holiday card photo with the whole crew: these are moments worth capturing while everyone is together.
A Thank You, From the Coast
To everyone who has hung one of my prints, booked a session, shared my work, or simply stopped to say hello, thank you. You are the reason I can keep walking these beaches and forests with a camera in my hands.
As the fog rolls in and the days grow short, may your season be full of warmth, good company, and the kind of light that makes you stop and look. And if you're looking for a way to bring a little of this coast into someone's home, I'd be honored to help.
